Communication that needs no infrastructure: no cell tower, no ISP, no satellite, just the phones already in everyone's pockets, passing messages hand to hand. The cycle runs the same way each time. An app launches, built for festivals or disasters. It goes viral from a protest or a blackout, not from marketing. Downloads spike into the hundreds of thousands in days. Then reality: security researchers break the crypto, or the crowd disperses and the mesh goes silent because a mesh with no nearby users is only a phone, or the team learns that people will not pay for an app they need once a year.

Cold start

A mesh needs density. Protests and blackouts provide it for free, which is why they are the only reliable viral moments. A Tuesday afternoon does not.

iOS backgrounding

Apple suspends Bluetooth advertising when an app leaves the foreground. Two locked iPhones cannot reliably find each other, so every phone-only mesh quietly degrades the moment people pocket their phones.

No one pays

The consumer price for this category was set at zero, first by free apps and now permanently by a nonprofit-backed incumbent. A free app is pure cost.

How a message travels

Short hops. Long reach.

Each phone reaches only the phones close enough to hear it, so two groups too far apart cannot talk directly. The always-on relay hub sits in the gap with longer range and bridges them: short phone hops on each side, the hub carrying the middle.
